TV SoundOff: Sunday Talking Heads: "Of course, the auto industry is our major source of that manufacturing 'institutional memory.' And, when you think about how America got through periods like World War Two, it took that industry's strength to help us win those wars and survive those times. One could argue that this is an industry that provides a national security backstop."
I thought that I was opposed to the auto bailout simply because "The Big Three" had made terrible decisions regarding product But maybe there is a reason to rethink this. I'm not sure Wal-Mart or Silicone Valley could produce the products needed to fight a war. Especially when all product in Wal-Mart is from China and Silicone Valley has outsourced all but the way the money is put in a bank. If you think about it, China is probably our biggest threat on the horizon. Sure, the terrorists will find a way to terrorize, but they will not invade us or make us leave any country we don't want to, but the Chinese have a gazillion people and they have to keep them busy somehow. If it should come down to the U.S. facing an army, such as the Chinese have now, we need an infrastructure we can turn to on a dime and stop building Pintos and produce tanks and machine guns. But I'm sure the Blackberry armed opinion makers (such as Rush and Boortz) will bloviate the line of free markets cure all.
