I had forgotten about this, but the current crop of "conservative" Republicans have always held that state courts, not federal courts, should decide state issues...such as vote counting problems or voter registration rules. But, in this case the Republicans wanted the federal courts (Supreme Court), that had a conservative majority, address this issue. Kind of like the case for unfettered free-market systems that it is now apparent that they don't believe in.
