The Reckoning - Bush’s Philosophy Stoked the Mortgage Bonfire - Series - NYTimes.com: "From his earliest days in office, Mr. Bush paired his belief that Americans do best when they own their own home with his conviction that markets do best when let alone.
He pushed hard to expand homeownership, especially among minorities, an initiative that dovetailed with his ambition to expand the Republican tent — and with the business interests of some of his biggest donors. But his housing policies and hands-off approach to regulation encouraged lax lending standards."
I thought it was Carters' fault. It had to have been Carters' fault. Or maybe it was the CRA's fault. By God, it would not have been the fault of the free-market system. The free-market system would not have let us down.

Hi,
It wasn't Carter's fault, it was *Clinton's* fault. Every bad thing that happened during the Bush administration was Clinton's fault. And the cure was always lowering taxes on the wealthy.
Dot-com bust? Clinton's fault. But it can be fixed with lower taxes for the wealthy (hey, maybe they'll buy your website!).
9-11? Clinton's fault. Fix it with lower taxes for the wealthy.
Hurricane Katrina? Clinton's fault. Lower taxes for the wealthy!
Iraq? Whatever! Clinton's fault! Lower taxes for the wealthy!
