There was a time, not long ago, if a southern man decided to register as a Republican he would be shunned by his entire family. Lincoln was a Republican, Sherman was a Republican, even Grant was a Republican. Richard Nixon changed all that with the "Southern Strategy." That's the strategy that has been used ever since.
